Those We Honor
At the beginning of each Stand for the Silent school presentation, student leaders read the biographies of bullying victims that have lost their lives to suicide as submitted by their families. Stand for the Silent honors the memory of these kids, and we thank the families for sharing their stories.

Laura Morris-Smalley
Laura Morris-Smalley passed away on November 14, 2020. She was at Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, for medical treatment after discovering a brain aneurysm. Laura was born January 8, 1972, in Clovis, New Mexico. She was a member of the 1990 class at Perry High School, Perry, Oklahoma. She was blessed with a daughter Jerri Dawn and later a son Ty. She was a wonderful mother. Her children always came first. On June 29, 2006, she married Kirk Smalley. They were the quintessential couple. They shared so many interest and loved spending time together. They loved hunting, fishing, baseball, gardening and travelling together. He was her knight in shining armor and she was the light of his life. Beautiful, hardworking, fierce, intense, loving, talented, charitable, humble, funny, faithful, loyal, tenacious. These are descriptive words that come to mind when thinking of Laura. But she was so much more. She was a wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, friend, counselor, avid hunter, angler, wonderful cook and animal lover. Laura loved her friends and family fiercely. She especially loved children and they loved her. It didn’t matter if they were relatives, neighbors, friends or complete strangers. If she loved you, you knew it. She was always there for you, even if it was a chat on the phone, a short text or message or to “roll up” her sleeves and do the hard work that needed to be done. She always was taking care of someone else. Cooking meals and delivering them, remembering your birthday, making sure every kid she knew had that special Christmas gift they were dreaming of. Some of you know Laura because of her, Kirk’s and Dawn’s unselfish, tireless work with Stand For The Silent, a non-profit foundation started with their help after the loss of their beloved Ty. What amazing things she helped accomplish as she and Kirk travelled the world sharing Ty’s story. They have helped so many children and adults work through their own pain, fear and suffering. It is estimated their efforts have touched over 4 million children worldwide. She shied away from the limelight and recognition. She never wanted a “fuss” on her behalf. She simply just wanted a “simple” life. We will miss her beautiful smile and infectious laugh. Until we meet again.

I didn’t know these things until after his death. Kids came from all over and told me Christian took the hits for other kids. Because he stood up for the underdog. That made me one proud mama! He also enjoyed playing with his younger cousins and riding his bike. Noah was bullied in school for being shy, having ADHD, and for having a stutter. He also struggled in gym class and was bullied and shamed for that as well. He was physically bullied, cyber bullied, and verbally bullied every single day. Other classmates stole his school supplies. He was also treated differently at school by teachers. School teachers and staff did nothing about the bullying and did not believe him when he would report having been bullied. One teacher had even pointed out “it would be one thing to be bullied by one or two people but an entire class?” Followed with “maybe the issue has to do with you, or you are lying.” Then walked away. He also was mistreated in class by the teacher because he learned differently. We lost our Noah on November, 16th, 2015.

Elijah Boyer Age 14
Elijah Boyer was born on June 21, 2007. He was from Georgia. He moved from Illinois in 2018. He was bullied in sixth grade for respecting teachers and not going along with the “cool” kids. Seventh thru ninth grades got better. He found his group and stood up to the bullies for the little guy. What we did not realize that bullying affected his self-esteem. He felt others tolerated him. On the outside, great kid with potential but on the inside he was dying and hating himself. We lost Eli on May 2,2022, death by suicide. He succumbed to major depression order, anxiety, and body dysphoria. It started with bullying and ended the only way he knew to stop the pain. His parents have established The Eli Project to promote awareness and connect with other families in their grief.
